Bat Exclusions

With Spring coming the bats are going to return or emerge from hibernation. That means homeowners will start having encounters with bats. To me, it means a lot of phone calls and a very busy time of year. The list is already getting long and it's only February.
The first thing to do when we receive bat calls is schedule an on site inspection where we will inspect the attic and the full outside of the residence. From the results of the inspection we can determine the extent of the bat problem and discuss what needs to be done to exclude the bats. We also like to do an evening bat watch to determine where the main entries and exits are. Then we will began sealing up any suspicious locations that a bat may use to enter a home, and leave at least one main entrance open. Over the open entry, we will install an excluder, which is a one way door which allows bats to exit, but not re-enter. After we are sure all of the bats are out, 5-10 days later we will remove the excluder and seal it up. This is the simplified version of excluding bats.
In the spring there is a short time frame to do this procedure because this is the maternal season. Maternal seasons usually run from mid May - mid August. Bats generally only have one pup a year, and during this time the pups cannot fly. For ethical reasons, we like to avoid excluding during this time period . We are about excluding bats, not killing them. We are still able to do inspections and prep work for an exclusion during this time so that as soon as the young are flying we can install the excluders.
If you suspect you have bats, please give us a call at 515-231-8816 and get on a list for an inspection. If you have any questions, you can use the contact form and we will get back to you.
